The PDF to CAD Handbook

Turn PDF drawings back into CAD

Step-by-step guides for getting a PDF into AutoCAD, FreeCAD, SketchUp, Fusion and your laser or CNC software, at the right scale and with clean geometry.

Why do PDF drawings cause so much trouble?

A PDF stores a printed sheet. Lines arrive at paper size, so an A1 plan drawn at 1:100 comes out 100 times too small until you set the scale.

Some PDFs hold pictures. A scanned plan has no lines inside at all, so a converter has to trace the ink, and the result needs redrawing.

Each program imports differently. AutoCAD reads PDF since 2017, while LibreCAD, FreeCAD, SketchUp and Fusion need a DXF first. The guides show the shortest way for each.
